Solder or bicone connector for copper installation, compression screw connection for polyethylene network, crimp, slip, etc. for an installation PER or even fitting to stick for PVC of evacuation or pressure: our advices for successful plumbing at home!
What are the main plumbing fittings?
To get to the point, the instrumentation tube fittings are brazed and require plumber’s tools for their installation; the olive connections used to connect copper pipes seamless – brilliant! -; the screw connections are screwed with Teflon or tow; PER connections are an integral part of a PER installation and the PVC fittings, pressure and evacuation, are to be glued. A plumbing installation is in 90% of copper cases so you will have to use according to your skills and needs copper fittings, twin couplings, screw fittings and PVC fittings – usually evacuation.
Copper fittings are soldered to copper pipes – brazing is a welding technique, strong brazing is distinguished for hot water and heating and cold soldering for cold water. The brazing is carried out with a torch or a lamp to be welded and a filler metal determined according to the metals to be brazed. Solder connections are dimensioned to the diameter of the pipes and configured according to the needs of the installation (elbow, tee, sleeve, etc.).
The screw connections are not very surprising to screw, their sealing is guaranteed by the application of Teflon or two on their threads. Used in the home network, they are made of brass and come in different threads, the size of which is expressed in millimeters or inches. The threaded connections are male, female or female-male and are used as elbow, tee, socket or plug and may require a seal.
Bicone or olive connection
A bicone connector allows to connect two copper pipes without soldering but by screwing, it is the solution for a fast and efficient connection. Their principle of operation: a ring deformed under the action of screwing makes the connection of the connection to the copper pipe tight. Perfect for those who do not have a soldering lamp or torch.
The PER refers to a material, the cross-linked polyethylene, and the connections make it possible to form a network. The PER is a flexible pipe used in renovation in water installation and heating for these installation facilities (without brazing). There are four main types of PER fittings: compression, crimp, slip, automatic.
As its name suggests, sealing is provided by crushing the pipe on the fitting. The crush is done with a nut, a compression fitting therefore requires only a flat key of the right size to be mounted.
PVC evacuation connection
PVC evacuation refers to a type of PVC that is not designed to withstand any internal pressure; the flow is therefore gravity. We find this type of PVC in the flow of sinks, washbasins, showers, baths and toilets.
PVC pressure fitting
Unlike PVC evacuation, PVC pressure (as its name suggests) supports, to a certain extent, an internal pressure; it can therefore be used in water supply.
To build a PVC pressure network, there are also all kinds of connections (elbows, sleeves, tees, reductions, screw connections, valves, non-return valves, etc.).
These connections are mounted either by gluing (in the case of a male / female socket), or by screwing in the case of a valve or a non-return valve, a union, and so on.
