Eating healthy and doing physical exercise on a regular basis should be two mantras if we want to reach elders in the best possible way.
But do we really know why exercise is so healthy and how often should we do it?
The correct and continuous practice of healthy habits greatly benefits our health, feeds our wellbeing and increases our life expectancy several more years, which offers us the possibility of living for around 100 years.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO): “Health is a state of maximum physical, mental and social well-being, and not only the absence of diseases.” Health is not only a matter of medicines, doctors, and patients, but many other factors are involved.
Physical benefits: where we would find physical improvement through resistance and muscular strength, regulation of blood pressure and body weight, maintenance of bone density so important in us from a certain age, flexibility and mobility of the joints.
Psychological benefits: Very personal of each one, but with common denominators like the enormous sensation of freedom that it produces channeled with the increase of the self-esteem and the diminution of the tension and the stress; the well-being that you feel the hormones that are generated such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine; the reduction of levels of anguish and depression in favor of feeling good about oneself.
10 healthy habits for a healthy lifestyle
Healthy habits are called a series of repetitive acts aimed at the conservation and improvement of personal health. From which we quote:
- Maintain a correct diet that provides a nutritional balance to the body with sufficient intake of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, minerals, and vitamins.
A healthy diet provides the body with enough nutrients for a good functioning of the body organs and is an effective natural therapy to prevent and cure diseases. In this way, many famous authors declared: Hippocrates “Let your medicine be your food and let your food be your medicine”. One hour of daily physical exercise strengthens our muscles and bones. It boosts our heart and improves blood circulation. Relax our mind and burn the necessary calories to avoid obesity.
- Sustain a healthy sleep rhythm.
It is necessary to sleep well during an adequate number of hours, to rest and generate energy for the performance of the tasks of the new day. Insomnia (on which I will discuss shortly) causes high blood pressure, heart disease, mental, metabolic and endocrine diseases.
- Maintain adequate hygienic habits.
Hygienic habits of personal hygiene, dress, and footwear.
- Enjoy free time.
And do it in an efficient and pleasant way.
- Exercise the mind.
Exercise it to work properly and avoid cognitive deterioration and the appearance of dementia.
A continuous training of our intellectual faculties with exercises that enhance memory, attention, ability to concentrate and learn new subjects avoids or at least delays cognitive deterioration and the appearance of dementia.

It is convenient to discharge the daily nervous tension with techniques of creative relaxation, hobbies performance as painting, literature, reading or sports in free time and cultivation of friendships, with the aim of relaxing and preventing the appearance of mental illnesses.

The practice of sexuality is heart-healthy (protects the heart), relaxes our mind, improves contraceptive methods and prevents the occurrence of sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, syphilis).
- Prevent domestic, labor and traffic accidents as much as possible.
Our habitual residence and our work center must meet certain safety conditions to avoid domestic and work accidents. These measures include the conditioning of the room, the furniture and its location, hygiene, lighting, and sound.
When planning our trips by car, we must take into account the rules of road safety and personnel to avoid traffic accidents.
- Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol, drugs of abuse (heroin, cocaine, marijuana, etc.), drugs and tobacco that are harmful to health.
These trigger drug addictions that intoxicate our body and generate diseases, which in many cases can be serious. The smoking causes lung cancer, heart attacks, cerebral thrombosis, cancer, etc.
