Everyone, once, we went to the store for a tape and we have come across several rows of tapes of different colors, sizes and materials. Given this, we have been surprised by asking ourselves: what are all these tapes for? What is the most resistant? What is the right one for my painting project?
Not only is it true that there are several types of ribbons designed and manufactured for different uses that can be given in decoration, painting, and DIY; but, in addition, a good choice ensures the best use of the tape. So, which one to choose?
Main types of tapes
Masking/painting tape: used in decoration and DIY to protect surfaces from paint stains. Generally, it is compatible with solvent based and water based paints. For best results, the application surface must be clean, and its use is recommended up to 48 hours.
Bodybuilder tape: is the tape to mask or paint vehicles. It is resistant in ovens with temperatures of up to 80º C. It does not leave adhesives and is very easy to remove.
Rice paper tape (Washi): is a yellow ribbon used for decoration and DIY jobs that require a finish of very straight and fine lines. It is made with Washi rice paper.
Outdoor tape: the blue masking tape is especially used for outdoor painting and nautical work. It is resistant to UV rays, easy to remove and leaves no residue.
Tape under tack: lilac, the term under tack refers to the type of masking tape of low adhesion; which makes it ideal for stucco and paint jobs on delicate surfaces.
American Tape: is a multipurpose tape generally used to join, seal, repair and waterproof. It presents an excellent and lasting adhesiveness. The support material is polyethylene reinforced with polyester fabric. It is resistant to water.
Packing tape: used to close cardboard boxes. They are usually of two types, transparent and brown. The difference between brown and transparent packaging tapes is basically in the dye of the adhesive.
Double-sided tape: used in the temporary or permanent fixing of carpets. It is suitable for various industrial fixings and mounting applications. The support material is a cotton fabric with bisilicon paper. It adheres well to all surfaces.
Insulating tape: it is a pressure adhesive tape, used to insulate splices of electrical wires and cables. Generally, it is made of thin PVC.
Vulcanized tape: also known as self-sealing tape, is a type of electrical tape, used to seal, waterproof and insulate conductors and electrical connections of water and moisture.
Teflon tape: it is a kind of adhesive tape, versatile, flexible, and used to secure joints with osca and prevent water leaks in pipes and stopcocks.
Printable tape: it is an adhesive tape in which it is possible to make an impression. To do this, you must have a printable nonstick coating. The marking tape is an example of a printable tape.
